NASHVILLE, T.N. – The Vanderbilt Commodores split 2 games against the #18 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (CHF).
Three Commodores scored in game 1. Drew Fietze buried a power play goal off a feed from Julian Yang with 11:54 remaining in the first. Alabama answered with a goal 5:08 left in the period.
Jay Kourkoulis and Ryan Boersma added tallies in the third period to tie the game. However, Alabama scored with 1:05 remaining in regulation to make it 4-3. An empty net goal sealed the victory for the Crimson Tide, with a final score of 5-3.
The Dores bounced back for Saturday’s game. Vanderbilt went up 3-0 halfway through the game, with goals from Owen Boersma, Jay Kourkoulis, and Harrison Parent. Six minutes after Alabama scored 10:48 into the third to make it 3-1, Ryan Boersma buried a rebound in front of the Crimson Tide’s goal to put the Dores up 4-1.
Alabama made a final push with 9:27 left in regulation and scored to cut the Commodore’s lead to 4-2, but was ultimately not successful in sparking a comeback. Vanderbilt would hold on to win the game 4-2.
Notable performances: Jay Kourkoulis had a four point weekend, scoring 2 goals and 2 assists. Harrison Parent netted his first goal as a Dore. Andrew Shearson stopped 91 out of 97 shots, with a save percentage of 0.938%.
Vanderbilt travels to Boca Raton next weekend, with two games against Lynn University.
